From the Principal

On Monday all staff were involved in a Bookmaking workshop with Amanda Bartram a consultant from Adelaide. Through Bookmaking strategy students learn how to “think like writers.” Even before Preschool age children are recognising the text types that they love to hear read to them over and over! Through exploring many forms of writing that exists for children they are able to develop and value their own writing. For example, today I heard some of our Foundation children talking about who the “author” was of their book and recognising where the author puts their name so the reader can see who wrote the book. Through Bookmaking teachers are able to teach mini lessons to stretch their writers eg introducing speech bubbles, repetitive sentences used in some books, BIG AND BOLD writing used by some authors.

Art at the Junior Primary

This term we welcome back Wendy Allen-Jordan. Mrs Allen-Jordan is the Junior Primary Arts teacher. At the JP we believe that art is more than just painting a picture, as children use a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colours, they learn the basics of math. When children experiment with materials, they dabble in science and when children feel good as they are creating, their self-confidence grows. Children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of thinking, which extends well beyond the Art room.
